one of the following stories, analyzing a literary strategy or technique the author uses to make the story more effective. Tie the use of the strategy or technique to one of the literary elements mentioned in our book.

“A & P.” Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, Drama, and Writing. Ed. X.J. Kennedy and Dana Gioia. 10th ed. New York: Pearson Longman, 2007. 16-20.

Hawthorne, Nathaniel. "Young Goodman Brown." Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, Drama, and Writing. Ed. X.J. Kennedy and Dana Gioia. 10th ed. New York: Pearson Longman, 2007. 420-428

Requirements: Your paper must be a five-paragraph essay of 2-3 full pages of text plus an additional Works Cited page with just the citation for the story (correct citations shown above). So basically, you will have an introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. You must include a Work Cited page listing the entry for the story you used. You are NOT to use any outside sources in this paper. It is just you and the story. Do quote from the story to support your points, however (at least one good quote per paragraph, but no more than 15% of total length of paper). As an optional part of the assignment, you may submit your finished paper electronically on my Blackboard site. If necessary, we will do an exercise to make sure you know how to do this. In the introduction, you should include (1) the author’s first and last name, (2) the title of the story in quotes, (3) a plan of development statement that breaks down the three things you will discuss in body paragraphs one, two, and three, and (4) the higher purpose the writer is using the strategies to achieve, as in illustrating a certain theme or developing the character.

Some examples of things that you may want to discuss are the following:

1 Plot
2 Character
3 Setting

A particular element may be more prominent in one story than another, and some elements, like symbolism and irony, may not be used in a story at all. It is important to choose an element (or something associated with an element, like a strategy or a technique) that is prominent enough that you can say something substantial.

Required Length: 2-3 pages of full text, plus a Work Cited page. This paper must be typed and double-spaced, and must use MLA style citations for the quotes. It also must include a Works Cited page at the end, even though the only work actually cited will be the story itself. (Remember that a bibliographic entry must use a hanging indent’t center the actual entry.)

In this assignment, keep the following things in mind:

1 Mention the author (by first and last name) and the title of the work you are discussing within the first few sentences. Titles of stories and poems are in quotes. Titles of novels and plays are in italics. Please remember this! Once you have gotten the preliminaries out of the way, just refer to the author by last name only from then on in your paper. You should never refer to an author by first name, but of course, you may refer to characters by whatever name they are referred to in the work.

2 ’t just jump from a quote to a statement to another quote to another statement. This is “chain quoting” and you should avoid it. Try to use well-chosen, moderate-length quotes. You can quote single words or short phrases if they are distinctive and help you make a quick point, but avoid peppering your paper with them (and don’t put single word quotations in single quote marks, as in ‘this’

3 ’t make statements like, “Sammy is, like, a real jerk, 'cuz he, like, descibes people in a cruel way, kno' 'm' say'n'.”

4 “elements” are really just broad categories. An author uses specific strategies within...
