The focus of our industry sector evaluation was on the UK’s mobile phone industry. Here we identified that there are eight leading mobile phone brands operating within the UK, these are Apple, HTC, Nokia, LG, RIM, Sony, Motorola and Samsung. The assignment looked at various situations and influences that are present in the industry and are effecting decisions being made by mobile phone brands. To do this we chose to focus on three different theoretical models that each looked in detail at a specific aspect of the industry’s environment. The first model was P.E.S.T.L.E, using this model we were able to identify the current issues existing within the macro environment of the mobile phone industry; the next model we choose to assist our evaluation was the S.W.O.T analysis. Although the first to aspects here (strengths and weaknesses) are identified within a specific organisations internal environment, opportunities and threats are relevant issues to the industry as a whole. The final aspect of our evaluation was carried out in line with Porters Five Forces the five forces Porter identified are the threat of new entrants, the threat of substitutes, the bargaining power of buyers, the bargaining power of suppliers and the competitive rivalry. All the issues identified by these models provided us with the framework necessary to evaluate this industry and identify the key factors of change accordingly. Apple Inc is a large multinational technology company created by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne in California, USA, on April 1st 1976. Their first product was a personal computer named the “Apple 1” and since that day they have moved strategically into more diverse technological markets to suit today’s consumer. As the Companies product portfolio became more diverse the name was changed from “Apple computers” to “Apple”. This has seen them move into commercial electronics that include phones (iPhone), music devices (iPod) and handheld tablets (iPads). Apple Inc is also noted to be an innovator in software design and creation and has produced operating systems known as “iOS”, the Itunes media system and the “safari” web browser for their computers. Recently , Apple have moved into the sale and delivery of digital content and applications through their online App store, iTunes stores, iBookstore and Mac App Store.
