1. critically evaluate the conceptual basis of accounting, and the impact of environmental and social influences.

2. recognise and critically evaluate the major issues involved in the setting of UK and international accounting regulations.

4. analyse and evaluate professional and business ethics in relation to financial reporting and the issue of creative accounting.

5. critically examine the implications of selected reporting standards on financial reporting and analyse the nature of accounting choices made by business entities.

6. undertake individual research within the literature on financial reporting developing research skills of data analysis and evaluation and to present their findings in a fully referenced report.


Assignment in this subject is compulsory. Failure to submit the assignment will result in automatic failure. The students are required to ensure that assignment should comply with the following instructions. Failure to do so would invite a penalty.

The students are required to find a newspaper article or web page report of an item of accounting news, i.e. it refers to current event, consideration, comment or decision that has been published after 1 January 2009. Your article could also come from one of the professional journals. The article should not come from an academic journal since academic journals generally do not contain news articles.

1. This is an individual written assignment.

2. The assignment is no more than 2,000 words.

3. The students should find an item of accounting news that has been published after 1 January 2009.

4. Attach the copy of the news from the original source where the source and the date of publishing can be identified.

5. The assignment should be computer typed, double-space and to have a font size of 12, Times New Roman. Hand-written assignments will not be accepted. All pages must be numbered accordingly.

6. The assignment should be submitted by due date. No late submission is permitted and late submission is going to have zero mark. In any situation which warrants extension of due date of submission, formal, prior permission must be obtained from authorized officers. Upon approval only submission can be submitted at a later date without penalty.

7. Bibliographies are required for assignments. To avoid plagiarism, you should acknowledge all references used in completing the assignment. Bibliographies should appear at the end of the assignments. Furthermore, marks will be deducted if bibliographies do not contain all required details. No excuses for acts of plagiarism will be entertained.

The university expects students to use Harvard referencing as specified in the book Cite them Right. Refer to for further advice and a link to an online version of Cite them Right. Unreferenced work will fail.
